The idea that gave birth to recordJet is as simple as it is revolutionary: the democratisation of the music industry. Every artist should have easy and fair access to the same tools as labels and majors, without losing their rights and without having to be tied to a partner for a long time. Complete freedom hand in hand with full support – that was the vision that created recordJet and that we follow to this day. How did this idea come about? More for personal reasons than entrepreneurial ones. Jorin Zschiesche wanted to found a company, but moreover, wanted to make his beloved music and its industry a better and fairer place and to give all artists the same chances of success.
How did that happen? recordJet was founded in 2008 and supported from the very beginning by a handful of trusted third-party partners. The mission was clear; how to achieve it, however, was not. To go from founding a one-person company driven by a love of music, to a functioning distribution website with several employees took a lot of work. Those first few steps were not easy: the start of the company was shaped by hope for the idea and anticipation, but also existential angst, doubts and a lot of work. But the investment was worth it: in the years following its founding, recordJet celebrated its successes – small at first, and then bigger – and laid the foundations of the company we are today.
From 2008 to 2010, the focus was on developing the service and signing contracts with our first few shops and partners. In 2010, the platform went from beta to live – finally! recordJet also founded its own label to enable artists to get label income from neighbouring rights and introduced a special label rate. In the same year, we started offering physical distribution, detailed trends and free charts registration.
2013 was going international, baby! recordJet became available in English and Spanish and the era of artist support began. Our goal to offer best in class support for our artists hasn't changed since then. That's why our support team is still the strongest-growing part of the whole recordJet team.
And not just the support team is growing: in 2015, we began product management (First Class), in 2018 we expanded the marketing department and in general, we are employing more and more people in all areas. Diversity and equality of opportunity are always in focus at recordJet, not just for artists, but also in the expansion of the team. In 2022, the team reached 30 people – and we are still growing!
Our online presence was given a visual makeover in 2015, 2017 and 2019, and is getting another one in time for our birthday in 2023 – we’re almost an adult now! But that is not our only success: recordJet’s artists have so far had countless chart successes and have been certified gold and platinum dozens of times. Some of these artists include: Alice Merton, Milky Chance, Topic & Nico Santos, Die Lochis, KAYEF, Edo Saiya and Spongebozz. Each of these successes confirms to us the value of our work and shows that independent and honest work bears fruit.
In 2023, we proudly celebrated our 15th birthday. What can we say? We are really over the moon: with the great artists we get to work with, with the fantastic team that makes recordJet what it is, and with the fact that we have stayed true and will continue to stay true to our mission of changing the music industry. We will carry on developing, improving our service and adapting to our customers’ needs in order to support artists, management and labels in their work.
